New research indicates that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying such treatments should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
