A minimum of thirteen people perish and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
